STARVING STRAY DOG
DODGED BULLET, FIGHTS FOR LIFE His name is Humble Hammett. His story begins just as his life was about
to end. ARRF volunteer Ann Fratesi received a phone call about a stray dog that
wandered onto a rural farm in Washington County, Mississippi. The worker on the farm stated the dog was
vicious and he was going to shoot it.
Ann pleaded with the worker and convinced him not to shoot the
starving animal. The worker stated he would
bring the dog to the Leland, MS dog pound and he would meet her there. Upon arrival, it was evident that the dog
was literally starving to death and that he was not vicious at all. Ann picked the dog up out of the back
of the pick-up truck and carried him into the shelter. Ann then called me (Debbie, ARRF volunteer)
by cell phone. She began to cry as she
described the horrific condition of this poor
pitiful creature. I quickly drove to
the shelter and took photos to document his condition. Humble Hammett is given his name because
"Hammett" is the name of the farm he was found on. His first name "Humble" is because he is one of
God's humble creatures. This sweet,
gentle dog shows no sign of aggression. He loves affection and quickly wags his
tail when petted. He gently licks my hand as I stroke his beautiful
hollow face. Humble Hammett's stomach
is severely distended because of starvation
and heart worms. Every bone in his
body protrudes beneath his thin skin. Even the bones in his facial structure show
from lack of nutrition. It is very heartbreaking
to witness one of God's beautiful creatures wind up in such a terrible
medical condition all because of neglect caused by a person. Humble's medical condition is
very serous. He is struggling for his
life right now. He has a will to live
and enthusiastically looks forward to seeing people. We do not know if he will survive his months
of neglect, abuse, and starvation.
ARRF is dedicated to saving all animals and especially those that for
no cause of their own have suffered such a horrendous life as Humble Hammett
has. The vet has placed him on medications to build his strength and control
the damage done to his organs from heart worms. ARRF is broke and we cannot afford to board
him at the vet while he recuperates.
Sadly, he must remain at the dog pound with no air conditioning or
escape from the constant feeding of mosquitoes. Only time will tell if Humble will regain
enough strength and body mass to endure his future heart worm treatment. For now our main focus is giving Humble
quality care. If you would like to contribute to a fund for medical
expenses that will be incurred with Humble please contact www.arrf-arrf.org. 100% of all donations designated for Humble will be used to help
save this poor guy's life. He deserves
a happy ending to his otherwise miserable beginning. Humble Hammett is very affectionate and
would love the chance to be someone's life long companion......maybe yours if he survives. Thank you, Debbie (ARRF volunteer in Leland, MS) arrf303@aol.com |
